Bachelor Thesis: Accessibility of UI-Elements in Video games

Barriers are everywhere in everyday life. Tools are constantly being developed to reduce or circumvent them, but with every new development, with every change in our environment, new barriers emerge.
Video games are evolving at a massive pace and are now one of the biggest entertainment mediums in the world, yet all too often the creativity and innovation of the medium fails to take into account people with disabilities. This runs through all elements of a game, including gameplay, narrative, controls and the graphical user interface. Barriers can arise at all of these points, making the game less accessible.

This thesis deals with the latter, illustrating common barriers in dealing with the graphical user interface of games, explaining how they arise and looking at approaches, technologies, and methods for reducing barriers. The paper only deals with the graphical user interface and related interactions. Of course, there is much more to the accessibility of a game, but the development of low-barrier gameplay and accessible narratives would go far beyond the scope of it.

In addition to the barriers and the means to reduce them, guidelines, aid organizations and projects that support the accessible use of video games and are significantly responsible for research, development and education in this field, as well as the legal situation of various national and international markets are also considered.

Finally, the knowledge gained is used to design an exemplary GUI that can be used for games of different genres and evaluate it on the basis of the previously defined criteria.
